Having won the title of World Performance Car four times at the World Car Awards there is no denying that the Audi R8 and especially the V10 powered iteration is a truly incredible machine.

With its breathtaking looks, groundbreaking technology, and a truly impressive set of performance figures, the V10 R8 proved that Audi was capable of delivering a capable supercar straight out of the box, on its first attempt.

Proven to be a contender amongst a very crowded field of far more exotic rivals from the likes of Ferrari and Lamborghini, Audi's first supercar continues to turn heads everywhere it goes and here 10 Things You Should Know About The Audi R8 V10.

Initially released in 2003 comprising a 5.0 liter 493 bhp 90 degree V10 the Gallardo provided sufficient inspiration for the Audi engineers to put pen to paper.

9 The V8 Sibling

R8 V8

Unveiled at the 2006 Paris Auto Show, the early R8 models were fitted with Audi's 4.2 FSi V8 which churned out a respectable 414 hp and marked the arrival of Audi's first mid-mounted sports car.

Lifted from the RS4 the V8 would propel the R8 to 60mph in 4.5 seconds and thanks to the Quattro all-wheel-drive system and magnetic ride suspension ensured that the sleek R8 would hug the tarmac with aplomb.

Knowing that drivers would be seeking more power, more speed and more exclusivity, Audi elevated the R8 to supercar status when they dropped in a thumping great V10.

With a choice of two outputs, the Lamborghini-derived 5.2-liter engine would deliver either 517 hp or, in Plus specification, 545 hp. Both would hit 60 mph in blistering times of 3.9 seconds for the standard car and 3.6 seconds for the Plus version. Flat out, 197 mph could be recorded on the speedometer.

7 Spyder

Having been teased in released footage during the filming of Marvel's Ironman 2, the R8 Spyder finally broke cover at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. To compensate for the loss of its roof the Spyder was fitted with additional chassis supports, dual roll-over safety bars along subtle styling changes, like the repositioning of the filler cap.

The Spyder would offer open-air thrills by hitting 60 mph in 3.7 seconds whilst covering the quarter-mile in 11.3 seconds. Ultra fashionable and superbly made, the Sypder proved that Audi could make incredible open-top supercars.

6 Gearboxes

At launch both the V8 and the V10 were offered with either a six-speed manual gearbox lifted from Lamborghini applications or a slick Audi-designed 6-speed single-clutch automated-manual called the R Tronic.

Allowing for lightning-fast semi-automatic shifts via a pair of paddles or a flick of the stick the R Tronic system was later updated to the faster dual-clutch R-Tronic transmission which offered 7 speeds.

5 Interior

Audi consistently creates vehicle interiors that are regarded as industry benchmarks, and the R8 is no exception. Spanned by the 'monoposto', the large curved trim section that borders the center console and door sections on either side of the driver's seat, the luxurious interior features high-quality materials and all the latest technology.

The latest R8 models can be ordered with the highly impressive Virtual Cockpit digital display which replaces the traditional analog driver dials with a 12.3 inch TFT screen that can be customized to display an array of useful information such as power output, torque figures, lap times, and G-Force.

4 LED & Laser Headlights

With the release of the Audi R8 LMX, a limited edition V10 edition with only 99 cars produced, Audi went one better and fitted laser modules that produce cones of light that reach twice as far as the standard LEDs.

3 Movie Star

The Audi R8 has been the ride of choice for Marvel's IronMan, Tony Stark, since the film's release in 2008 albeit in V8 specification. Upgrading to a V10, the hero bounced between both a Spyder and Coupe in later films, whilst also using the all-electric eTron R8.

Wolverine

Wolverine, everyone's favorite clawed hero, played by Hugh Jackman, also got in on the Audi action when a V10 driven by the character Yukio featured in The Wolverine. Sporting after-market wheels, the V10 cut a dash on the red carpet along with the film's stars.

2 V10 Racer

The R8's motorsport career started in 2009 as Audi Sport created racing versions, named LMS, for privateers in the GT3 category with cars being fitted with a detuned 500bhp V10 from the road version of the car.

LMS R8

In 2012 power was boosted to 570 hp resulting in victories at the Nurburgring 24 hours and Spa 24 hours races. In 2015 the LMS received an update and was now built on a space frame platform, with a further Evolution model having 585 hp and being able to hit 60mph in 2.8 seconds whilst the latest 2020 LMS GT2 sports an incredible 640 hp.
